Safaricom of Kenya is the most important IPO in the country in 2008 and is expected to raise 50 billion Kenyan shillings (or about US$ 763 million) through a 25% stake being sold to the public.

Safaricom is said to be the most profitable company in East Africa. Safaricom is a joint-venture between Vodafone of the UK and state-run Kenya Telecom.

The number of mobile-phone users in Kenya more than doubled last year to 11.4 million and is expected to continue to grow rapidly.
